A real-time messaging space for your team. Send messages in shared channels or in one-on-one direct messages, attach files, react with emojis, mention teammates, and reply in threads.

Who can use it

  • Anyone in your organization with read access to the Chat module.

  • Sending messages, creating channels, and managing them require the matching permissions.

  • The feature must be enabled on your plan.

How to get here

From the sidebar, open Profile & Company and click Team Chat.

Step-by-step: create a channel

  1. Click the + button next to the Channels section in the sidebar.

  2. Fill in: Name (spaces become hyphens), Description, Guidelines, Visibility (Public or Private).

  3. For Private channels, tick the teammates you want to add. You're added automatically.

  4. Click Create channel.

Step-by-step: send a direct message

  1. Find a teammate's name under Team Members.

  2. Click their name. A DM thread opens.

  3. Type your message and press Enter.

The dot next to each teammate shows online status: green, yellow (away), red (do not disturb), or grey (offline).

Step-by-step: send a message

  1. Open the channel or DM.

  2. Click into the message box.

  3. Type, use the formatting toolbar, or press Shift+Enter for a new line.

  4. Press Enter to send.

Step-by-step: attach files and images

  1. Click the paperclip (any file) or image icon.

  2. Pick the file.

  3. A preview appears. Add an optional note.

  4. Press Enter.

For voice notes: click the microphone icon, record, then send.

Step-by-step: mention a teammate

  1. Type @ and start typing a name.

  2. Pick the person from the dropdown.

  3. Send. They get a notification.

Step-by-step: react to a message

  1. Hover (or long-press on mobile) a message.

  2. Click the smiley face icon.

  3. Pick an emoji. Click again to remove your reaction.

Step-by-step: reply in a thread

  1. Hover the message.

  2. Click the reply icon.

  3. The reply panel opens on the side. Type and send.

Step-by-step: mark messages as read

Opening a channel or DM marks visible messages as read. The unread badge clears once you've scrolled through new messages.

Step-by-step: bookmark, pin, copy to a data room, and turn into a task

Each message has an action menu with extra options:

  • Pin — pinned messages show in a dedicated section.

  • Bookmark — save in your personal bookmarks.

  • Copy to Data Room — send an attachment to a data room.

  • Create task — turn a message into a task.

Tips & limits

  • Messages are encrypted at rest.

  • Use the search field at the top of the sidebar to filter quickly.

  • Drag and drop files from your desktop to attach.

  • A connection status indicator shows if you go offline; sending pauses.

  • Private channels only appear in the sidebar for their members.

FAQ

Who can see my messages in a public channel?

Anyone in your organization with chat access. Private channels are members-only.

Can I delete a message I sent?

Yes. Open the message's action menu and choose delete.

Can I edit a message after sending?

Yes. Other participants see an "edited" indicator.

How do I leave a channel?

Open channel options and find the leave option. Rejoin public channels anytime; private channels need an invite.

Will I get notified for every message?

You get notifications for DMs, mentions, and thread replies. Channel messages without a mention are quieter — adjust in channel notification settings.
